IELTS or OET Exam Preparation

IELTS and OET examinations have a very specific format, and exam preparation classes ensures that students will not be surprised by what they find in an exam, and are well prepared to demonstrate their proficiency. Our teachers are highly experienced and are committed to inspire and motivate the students to develop the skills and strategies to become independent learners.

What is the content of this course?

A strong focus is given to the requisite micro skills and strategies needed to deal with the variety of tasks within the Reading and Listening tests, and good quality academic writing. Speaking practice aims to give students confidence to be both fluent and accurate in their oral communication.

Courses run in 8 week cycles, consisting of 20 hours per week, in 2 afternoon sessions.

Education Training Consultants (ETC) - Palmerston North

Certificate in English Language Competence (IELTS Academic)

This course develops the writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills for the IELTS test. One programme is for students wanting to gain 6.0 to 7.0 or higher and another for students wanting 5.0 or higher.
Both are intensive study programmes and require serious students who are willing to study in the classroom 25 hours per week, and another 10 to 15 hours self study.
Students can sit the IELTS test in Palmerston North and Wellington, tests are held every 4 weeks

Certificate in English Language Competence (OET Occupational English for medical nurses)

Our OET course is specifically designed to help nurses,while other medical professions may study this course. The focus will be English for nurses. This 6 month course covers the writing reading speaking and listening requirements of the OET test. When ever possible lessons use medical contexts, this not only helps in the preparation of the OET test, it also increases students understanding of medical issues.

What is the OET Occupational English Test?

The test measures the language competency of health professionals who are seeking registration and the ability to practice in an English-speaking context. It is designed to ensure that language competency is assessed in a relevant professional context. The OET is administered by the OET Centre six times a year.

This course is ideal for students who wish to study for a Bachelor of Nursing degree, or for nurses who wish to gain valuable work experience in an English speaking environment. In addition to lessons, you will have the opportunity to work part time in the Health Care industry.

* 30 lessons per week for 24 or 36 weeks
* IELTS score of 5.5 + required
* General English/ English for Nursing (mornings)
* Academic English (afternoons)
* 20 hours a week paid work experience (weekends & evenings)

Nursing English modules include: Language of the Hospitals, the Healthcare System, Health and Disease, Medical and Anatomical Terminology, Patient Assessment, Diet, Elderly Care, Alternative Treatments, and Medication.

ENGLISH STUDIES FOR NURSING REGISTRATION (ESNR): IELTS 6.0

The ESNR programme was specially designed to assist overseas qualified nurses to achieve an IELTS score of 7.0 OR a 'B' pass in all four skill areas of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

The programme itself consists of two courses:

1. IELTS Preparation OR OET Preparation (26 weeks):
This component of the programme consists of two options.

Option A is the Intensive IELTS Preparation course
Option B is the Intensive OET Preparation course.

Learners can choose the option they would like to study based on the test they intend to take.

2. Working in NZ – Seminars and Workshops: The second component of the programme is designed to introduce nurses to New Zealand health industry, living in New Zealand and workplace culture. Nurses would also be taught how to write a CV, search for jobs, apply for jobs and attend an interview. After completing this course, nurses will be assisted by WIE’s job recruitment partners to obtain part-time work* of up to 20 hours per week.

PRE-ENGLISH STUDIES FOR NURSING REGISTRATION (PRE-ESNR): IELTS 5.0

This programme is designed for qualified nurses that do not fulfill the IELTS 6.0 requirement for the ESNR programme. Upon completion of the Pre-ESNR programme, learners will be promoted to the ESNR programme.

The programme itself consists of two courses:
